Sugawara Atelier

Pict

A studio for a photographer built on a steep slope. Considering the site's conditions and budget, the architect decided to use six 11 meter ready-made PC piles (\50,000 per unit) as columns standing on independent footings. The studio's floor floating 8 meters above the ground is comprised totally of timber girders and joists to secure adequate horizontal stiffness. While the south and west sides of the building were wholly glazed, a newly developed material, polycarbonate cavity walls filled with polystyrene pellets, was used to build the north and west sides for securing an insulation effect and screening the rooms from observation.
