This seminar focuses on how vision loss affects functioning and how to incorporate the needs of people with impaired vision into building design. Issues of universal design, color, contrast, wayfinding and lighting will be discussed.

Designing architectural and interior spaces for people with disabilities is an expanding market. With the aging of the population and the Americans with Disabilities Act, there is a demographic imperative for architects and designers to re-examine how buildings and environments are designed. It is essential to incorporate universal design concepts that enhance accessibility, are aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly. However, many accessible design programs give only minor consideration to the needs of people with impaired vision - a large and fast growing segment of the population.
